Coarse Fishing Malaysia: On the Road to Take on the World

Malaysia should soon be represented in coarse fishing World Championships. Hopefully in 2016, there will be a team in the World Feeder Champs in Serbia. Before that, Tengku ‘Guv’nor’ Izzudin is travelling with Steve Lockett to get a taste of competing against some of the best in the world.

Steve runs the publicity for the Lakeland and Inland Waterways World Pairs Angling Championships each year, an event that takes place in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland over the course of a week. Top anglers like former World Champions, Tommy Pickering, Kevin Ashurst and four times World Champion Bob Nudd are regular faces. Current World Feeder Champion, Steve Ringer will be there along with most members of the gold-medal winning Preston Innovations Team England.

For Guv’nor, it will be a baptism of fire, but he is determined to show Malaysian angling in a good light. “I hope to at least catch a fish every day and hopefully not finish last on any day,” he told us.

The fishing will be mainly feeder fishing, with some pole work also needed. To get into the swing of things, Steve collected Guv from Heathrow airport and then took him out on a local lake. Accurate casting is one of the key skills needed to be successful in feeder fishing. This is why Steve spent a whole morning working with Malaysian anglers on Lake Titiwangsa recently on just such skills.

Guv had to cast a baited feeder 30m to a tree-lined island at Steve’s local Town Parks Fishery to tempt the resident carp. After two hours of regular casts, and a few tweaks from coach Steve, Guv was landing the feeder gently, just off the island. A small carp was the result, on a hair-rigged 8mm hard pellet with Bait-Tech Super Method Mix on the feeder.

After this practise, Guv swapped to a long pole rig, baiting with small pieces of worm over a bed of groundbait and 6mm pellets. Small roach were first on the scene, followed by a skimmer and a bonus ghost carp. The carp really gave Guv the run around, but he skilfully subdued it and then posed for some photos.

Keep following as Guv reveals more about his trip to Ireland over the next week. First he will do some practise on the venues, and then he will watch a practise match on Sunday before the five days of competition…
